John Oliver on Trump's Budget Plan: It's 'The End Credits For America'
Last Week Tonight's John Oliver built his show's main segment Sunday night around the release of President Trump's budget plan. The so-called "skinny budget ... sounds like a line item that Trump might've included in one of his pre-nups," the comedian quipped.
Oliver noted that CNN's presentation of the severe agency cuts in Trump's plan looked like "the end credits for America. Thanks for helping us out, Agriculture Department! Hope you find a gig with the next country that rises from our ashes."
Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney's self-described method for writing the budget was also ripe for jokes:
"We wrote it using the president's own words. We went through his speeches, we went through articles that have been written about his policies, we talked to him, and we wanted to know what his policies were, and we turned those policies into numbers."
Oliver noted that Trump's words aren't always consistent or easily understood. "Mulvaney treated Trump's past statements like Trump treats women: randomly singling out a few of them and then reducing them down to numbers," Oliver said.
The constant Trump critic also took aim at Trump voters in Appalachia and other rural areas, Trump's Cabinet and his foreign policy in the segment, which you can watch above.
