Federal Employees Unlikely to Receive Extra Time Off Around Christmas

President Trump may have put renewed emphasis on the phrase “Merry Christmas,” but that is unlikely to translate to additional time off for feds this holiday season.

This year, Christmas Day falls on a Monday, which federal workers will receive as a holiday. In years where Christmas falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, presidents have often given civil servants Christmas Eve or Dec. 26 off to create a four-day weekend. Some presidents have given employees a half-day for Christmas Eve when Christmas is on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday.

President Obama last gave extra time off to federal employees in 2015, when workers received four hours off on Thursday, Dec. 24. But last year, Christmas fell on a Sunday, so employees only received the following Monday as a holiday.
