Play of the Day: The Shutdown Hits the Food System

The FDA has to reduce inspections due to the shutdown.

The Oscars ceremony is just over a month away and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences still does not have a host but is moving forward anyway. The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon joked about the news, saying that United States is moving forward without a government and has been for weeks.

The shutdown has had far-reaching effects on the government and the FBI sent a letter to Congressional leadership last week saying that the bureau's work could be halted. Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that President Donald Trump would enjoy this and reopened negotiations wit Congressional Democrats by saying "Eat my butt." Colbert also joked about the news that the FDA is slowing inspection work because of furloughs, saying the slogan "Kid tested, mother approved" has now been shortened to just "Kid tested." He also showed video of one of Lucille Ball's most famous comedic performances to demonstrate what FDA inspections probably resemble during the shutdown.
